Hi Hal-

Unfortunately, I was not elected to the council when this process began, however, I take great interest in, and share the responsibility for, the result.

The meeting to which you refer was not being reported completely, in my view. At that meeting, respresentatives of the project, Embassy Suites and the design team were there to explain what they are doing to attempt to bring the design into compliance with that which the council approved before my taking office.

It is my opinion that no one on the council is letting them off the hook. I, personally, blasted these representatives and that, too, was reported in the newspaper, but not in your brief coverage here.

In any case, the purpose of the meeting you mention was in part for the purpose of the Embassy Suites team to explain how they would move forward to fix the problem. The problem is both visual/cosmetic and a safety issue as well.

Clearly all council members want both addressed and that is the goal. However, when the design team spoke at the meeting, they got an earful from the council and left understanding what is desired by the people of
Glendale.

It remains to be seen what they come up with, and that is the bigger question. If the complaint is that at that update meeting the council did not unsheath clevers and chop the design team's heads off, then, yes, you are correct. However, I am not sure what that would accomplish.

Embassy Suites fully understands the problem and the concern and has asked for the opportunity to attempt to comply. I believe we need to allow them to do so. After that, we'll see where we are.

Thank you as always, Hal, for bringing issues of importance to the fore.

Sending you my best regards,

J

Subject: Embassy Suites Helicopter Landing Pad

According to WEEK IN REVIEW in the August 23rd Glendale News-Press, "The Redevelopment Agency on Tuesday (8-19-08) asked the developer of the nearly completed Embassy Suites hotel to fix what many on the city panel viewed as a design flaw near the structure's helicopter-landing pad."

In NOTABLE QUOTABLES of that same Glendale News-Press. Frank Quintero was quoted as saying, "That wasn't what I voted for."

Is "asking" the developer to fix the problem ALL that any member of the current Redevelopment Agency and City Council intends to do about this problem?

At the present time the Embassy Suites Hotel is the ugliest high rise building in the city of Glendale, if not in all of Southern California.

If this is not corrected, I hope plaques are installed in BOTH the Embassy Suites Hotel and in Glendale City Hall stating, "Embassy Suites Hotel Helicopter Landing Pad Compliments of Glendale Mayor John Drayman and City Council Members Ara Najarian, Frank Quintero, Dave Weaver and Bob Yousefian".
