03-29-09, E-Mail from Carole Weling to Los Angeles Times Vice President Scott Pompe Regarding the Bias of the Glendale News-Press

Dear Mr. Pompe ---

I have been an active member of the Glendale Community for at least thirty (30) years.  This means that I and my husband read the paper and respond to issues of interest via Letters to the Editor.  This activity has been on going for many many years.

It is with deep sadness that I must advise you that your current staff is actively engaging in biased reporting and editing of the news and events here in Glendale.  This is not what a paper is all about.  One would hope that your staff has the character to leave their prejudices and favoritism at the door.  This is not the case with the current staff and their reporting of the current city elections under way.

A common complaint that I hear is that the editorial staff openly refuses to print letters to the editor that reflect a view point different than the status quo.  I think that you need to monitor those employees that are under your supervision more closely.  I personally have had some dealings with the editorial staff that leads me to question their ethics and motives on several different levels.   I am sure that you agree that the Glendale News Press should not be a “voice” for city hall.  The Glendale News Press should keep their reporting and relationship with city hall at “arms length” to ensure their objectivity.

With the popularity of the written word in jeopardy, almost on a daily basis, it is strongly suggested that steps be taken to correct these serious issues.  I for one, enjoy reading a paper.  Unfortunately, the current staff is destroying their creditability by slanting, editing and outright eliminating topics that are newsworthy here in Glendale.
